7 Things a Guy Must Do Before Going on a First Date
February 25th, 2009, Posted by Tina WallaceFirst dates can be scary things. You want to make the best impression possible, knowing she will be scrutinising your every move and judging you on that basis. For that reason you have to get it right or there won’t be a second date. It can be surprising to discover just how many simple and easy things a guy fails to do that could make all the difference on a first date. Here are 7 things a guy must do before going on a first date.

2. Shave. You can skip this one if you haven’t started shaving yet, but then, that would probably make you a bit on the young side. Take your time to shave properly. If you wet shave, be careful not to cut yourself. They are called safety razors, but they can cut if you’re not careful. You don’t want to turn up on your date with several plasters on your face.
3. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get ready. Spend some of that time choosing the right clothes, and yes, you do need to change your underwear – even if you don’t expect to get intimate. Don’t try to impress by dressing too flashy, or choosing the really laid back look with torn jeans. Be smartly dressed – not too much and not too little.
4. Choose a gift for her. Don’t go near any jewellery shops. That’s going too far. Don’t spend a lot on the gift, and don’t make it too big either. You will have to carry it with you and if it’s the size of a small piano, you will simply look stupid. A single rose stem may be all you need.
5. Find out all you can about her before you meet. If you have agreed to meet through an online dating web site, then study her profile and remember the details. A girl will be flattered if she discovers that her date has taken the trouble to find out a little about her. However, don’t go too far. You could run the risk of being accused of stalking. Telling her that you know her bra size is definitely going too far.
6. Take enough money with you. It’s an unwritten rule that the guy pays for the first date. She may want to pay her share, so don’t press the point too hard. But if you are expected to pay, it is not a good time to discover that you didn’t bring enough money with you. First impressions count, and not having enough money to pay a bill will not go down well!
7. Get her name right. You do not want to call her Betsy when her name is Betty, for example. It’s easy to make a mistake with a similar sounding name, but never ever call her by your ex-girlfriend’s name. That is simple stupidity, and it means you are not ready to be dating again. Believe it or not though, that sometimes happens!
