The Mystery Of Why They Went Away

November 19th, 2009, Posted by Eddy Ankrett

So you’ve been dating the same person for quite some time now. A couple of years, in fact. And things seem to be going very well.

But for some reason, your significant other just got up and left. Well okay. She told you that she was leaving you. After so many years of dating and sharing a life together, things have suddenly collapsed. The sad part is that you’re clueless as to why she left you. And she won’t even tell you. Except for the reason that “it’s her, not you”. This leaves you beside yourself, alone and confused.

But why do couples really break up? Why do they “throw away” several years of dating (or marriage in some cases) just like that? Admittedly, different couples have different reason. And most of them may have really tried but sometimes, it just isn’t enough. Let’s try and see what are the most common reasons for couples parting ways:

A Third Party: This is probably the most common reason why couples go their separate ways. It’s called infidelity. Many times, a man or woman will find someone who is “more attractive, more interesting”, and simply “better” than their current love. Why this happens seems to be a mystery. Some say that the spouse, for instance had a few shortcomings. Or, the person is a natural flirt and just couldn’t resist temptation.

Incompatibility: This is yet another popular reason for breakups. Couples that say “it just won’t work. We’re too different”. Well, we’re all different, aren’t we?

Lack of communication: Honest and open communication is one of the keys to any successful relationship. It means being able to speak your mind freely and without any fear of being “tuned out”. It likewise means being open to whatever the other person has to say. To give them a chance to express themselves freely. This is where many couples tend to blink. One of them starts to “clam up”, for instance. After trying several times to get through, the person reaching out eventually gives up. And breakdown in communication ensues.

Boredom: Yes, it can happen. After several years of dating and being together, it can becomes monotonous. The same thing over and over again. A lot of couples who don’t notice this can eventually wake up one day with no feelings for their mate whatsoever. While feelings aren’t the be-all-and-end-all of a relationship, they are the “spark” that keeps the flames of love alive.

But whatever their reasons are, it is still sad to see a couple go their separate ways. So whether dating or already married, take care of that relationship. It would really be a terrible thing to see your loved one go away.
